clean PC, be less immortal, have a smoother game

Post by freekarol »

Here are some tips that can make your PC behave better. Feel free to correct me or even to add other tips.

Ask your parents if you can do what you will read here or tell them to do it instead of you.

SOFTWARE

ANTIVIRUS-beginner, intermediate computer user
Avast
http://www.avast.com/en-us/index" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Avira
https://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Microsoft Security Essentials
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... s-download" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These are best free antivirus software. Always check if your language is supported+PC requirements.

Firewall-intermediate computer user
This is not for beginners because downloading a firewall is not enough. You must also know how to configure it correctly. Even if you can find lots of manuals on the Internet...

Windows 7 firewall
There is nothing to download because if you have Windows 7 then you already have this firewall.

Comodo Firewall without Comodo Antivirus
http://goo.gl/AQsPB" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Zone Alarm without Zone Alarm Antivirus
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us ... -steps.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Web browser-beginner, intermediate computer user
Firefox
Chrome
Opera
Internet Explorer is secure just in Sandboxie

Sandboxie-beginner, intermediate computer user
http://www.sandboxie.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Theoretically when you run everything in this software you can live without antivirus. But I dont recommend it.

CCleaner-beginner, intermediate computer user
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.wikihow.com/Use-CCleaner" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Without any doubt, this is top software when it comes to make your PC run fast. Google some manuals before using this software.

Malware Scanners-beginner, intermediate computer user
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
http://goo.gl/mcfZA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

SUPERAntiSpyware
http://goo.gl/jfOne" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

SUPERAntiSpyware is safety. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has sometimes false positives especially if your PC is full of cracked software. That's why you should visit this forum:http://forums.malwarebytes.org/. You must post there a log that this software will always generate:http://goo.gl/VTt2AO

SAFE COMPUTER USE

SAFETY DOWLOADING-beginner, intermediate computer use
1.Download just from trustworthy sites.
2.If you dont know if a website or a link that somebody sent you is clean then use this service to check it out:https://www.virustotal.com/en/#url
3.you can also use this service to scan files you have downloaded for malware:https://www.virustotal.com/en/
4.Always test the downloaded software in Sandboxie or VirtualBox to know, what the software will install on your PC(especially when you dont read End-user license agreements). You wont be surprised when you see unwanted toolbars that were installed in your web browser any more. :wink:

SAFETY TESTING SOFTWARE-beginner, intermediate computer use
1.use Sandboxie
2.use VirtualBox or VmwarePlayer
https://www.virtualbox.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

NO ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT-beginner, intermediate computer use
Use a standard account instead. You dont need the admin account for surfing the Internet or for playing games.

If your account is an administrator account then you can just change it into a standard one:
Windows 7- http://goo.gl/FuqqX" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Windows XP- http://goo.gl/vbf00m" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have Windows 7 then enable UAC
http://goo.gl/09aHH" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

DISABLE A GUEST ACCOUNT
Windows 7- http://goo.gl/Mgky4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Windows XP- http://goo.gl/Y5SQoT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

DISABLE PROGRAMS RUNNING ON STARTUP-beginner, intermediate computer use
Use Ccleaner:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYhl3VJDnA8

Dont delete anything. Just disable or enable.

PLAYING H2-beginner, intermediate computer use
1.If you have an old PC, Laptop or bad connection then you should:
-disable HD modes,
-decrease a screen resolution
-textures set to low
-engine should be NecroSpeed and not NecroSmooth
-special FX disabled
-play in the first person

2.If you dont have a super fast computer and internet connection then you should close all unnecessary programs:
-one web browser is open with one tab, no other tabs or windows for facebook, youtube etc.
-no instant messanger running

Dont confuse FPS with your internet connection. FPS is about your graphic card=how smooth your game will be and not how much you will be mortal/immortal.

Most of the teenagers tend to install (try) all kind of crap on their computers.
Some crappy apps come with adware/spyware which can NOT be uninstalled!
A computer (OS / browser) bloated with crap leads to glitches, freezes, crashes
and all kind of abnormal behaviours.

Simply put, bad experiences for the user.
The only solution for a messed up OS is a clean reinstall.
In other words, you need to format the HDD and to reinstall the OS.
Obviously, you'll need to reinstall most of the (useful) programs after that.
So take care and think twice before installing any app.

Don't click the OK and NEXT buttons like a monkey.

Thanks for your other good advice. :biggthumbsup:

"Don't click the OK and NEXT buttons like a monkey."
Lot of adults do this too. No wonder they are suprised when they find out what programs they have installed on their PCs, hehe

I always install software that I have never installed before in Sandboxie or VirtualBox(I prefer Sandboxie cuz it works great on slow PCs). It saved me many times... My last experience is when software offers you unwanted software during installation(this is normal) but even if you you decline it the software is installed anyway.

I saw some programs to uninstall crap so no reinstall is needed. I will have to search for them cuz I don't remember them, hehe.

Anyway, reinstalling is not needed, just use an HDD image you made as a PC backup. But lots of people are too lazy to back up their PC or even they don't know there is something like back up. Laptops and Windows 8 can be restored to factory seettings without using any DVD or an external HDD.

Windows Restore is not safe (in case of trojans and viruses).
Many of them infect those backup files first of all. :mrgreen:
A backup stored on the same HDD is not safe either.
The only safe solution is a backup stored on an external HDD.
But 99% of the users don't have an external HDD and/or they don't perform weekly or monthly backups.
For these reasons, most of the users need to reinstall the OS to get rid of troubles.
Of course, if you reinstall the OS, you'll lose a bunch of useful programs and updates.

Laptops has a recovery partition to restore them to factory settings. I think the same has Windows 8. So no restore points are needed. Personally, I dont believe the restore points at all because they never worked correctly when I used them.

Backups should be stored in two places:
1.external HDD that is at a place where I use my comp
2.external HDD that is outside a place where is my comp(you know my house can burn down or be flooded). But much better is to store my backups in cloud.

I backup my system partition every month or everytime when I make important changes to Windows. I backup my data partition daily because I make changes there everyday.

When you have a system image of your Windows that works properly(with all installed software and your settings) then no reinstalltion is needed. It saves time. Who would like to tune a PC again? That's boring, haha.

Hope, some players will read this. Backup, backup, backup and again backup. Even Windows 7 can make a system image so don't be lazy and do it. :D

It seems this is not about malware but about a Windows bug. Ask for advice in some of XP forums:http://goo.gl/5BgK2f

For Windows 7, this is the best forum:http://www.sevenforums.com/

Or you can find a good PC forum in your native language.
