The knife is a HUD weapon for over an year 
It's still disabled because I have to review and enhance the animations sets for all the characters.
A close combat weapon (knife, club, or crowbar) is needed, that's for sure.
And you'll get it at one point.

I'm the guys who mentioned this 
about the knife needed in hopeless2 for close combat battles, but it didn't get popular, but now it is! and finally recognized for the future selected weapon
