Help Guys!

Post by Timberwolf »

With all you gamers here, I know somebody has an ATI graphics card or at least can tell me something about graphics cards.

How do I adjust it to get good HD picture and all that stuff?

I installed a brand new graphics card and everything still looks exactly the same.

Help me now and I won't humiliate you in camp when I finally figure it out!

:P

Get a 9400 GT 1 gig of ram
If properly configured, the graphics are great

Don't give up.
Talk to that guy and try to replace it with Nvidia.
You can get at the same price (or cheaper) 8400GT/GS or 8500GT/GS.
And they should fit with your weak PSU (that's why I didn't mention 8600GT)

I don't think it's the card. I mean, even though it's not a strong card, I should still be seeing some performance boost.

I think it's this stupid Vista. It keeps automatically downloading a generic VGA driver and I can't stop it! I've went to preferences to stop it, I cancelled the download in progress, etc... but it keeps popping up.

I can tell from the game page that it's not working right. The character walks around in a circle looking like slow motion. It's just a glich fest.

When I go to disable the graphics, it says I must reboot. THEN after I reboot it says "Vista has detected bla bla drivers and has disabled bla bla" ... So I go and look and it's supposedly the onboard disabled, but it messes my screen resolution up and it's like the ATI isn't running but the generic adapter's running.

I need to completely get rid of these Vista graphics and then install the ATI graphics. But I can't. Even if I unhook it from the Internet, it still downloads.

I'm gonna look around in the registry or something and completely remove all video card entries.

That's right.
I just talked to a Radeon X1300 owner.
On Windows XP-SP3 and with 2GB RAM he gets 40-48 FPS in VIP with 6-7 players!
Obviously there is something wrong with your OS/drivers installation.
You need to reinstall the graphics card drivers and the shockwave plugin.
Also take care: the latest driver is not necessarily the best one for your graphics card.
You need to find the best driver for Radeon X1300. :|
Here is a simple benchmark to test your graphics card in Software/OpenGL/DirectX mode:
http://necromanthus.com/Games/ShockWave/RenderTest.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

p.s.
Enes (kurt) got a 100% performance boost after he switched back to Windows XP.

I've tried all of that -- about three times each. Seriously.

I took the card out and ditched the drivers and I realize that the card is working for video features, screen resolution, and stuff like that. But AS SOON as I load the game screen, it begins glitching.

I think it's one of two things. 1: that other graphic card present is dueling with ATI and making it have that choppy performance. 2: some mystery program I have isn't installed, and maybe that's what's doing it. I don't know what this program is. I just know it wasn't there before. I found it in device manager.

Maybe you can tell me.

1) uninstall its drivers and disable the onboard Nvidia graphics (also check out all the BIOS related settings).
ATI and Nvidia on the same machine is a very bad move.
2) that's ACPI related
You need to (re)install the mainboard drivers.

I have multiple times. Vista just instantly downloads a generic driver before I can even reboot. If I disable the driver, it comes back. If I uninstall the driver, it comes back. If I outright delete the entire driver, some generic driver and some generic shadow driver auto installs.

Then I'll get a message saying that one graphic card has to be disabled, and it's always the nvidia they disable. So I don't understand why Vista keeps downloading the same damn driver back if I already have a graphics driver installed.

There's no way I can stop it. I don't any control over my own damn computer.

I hope that guy from Mac goes and kills Bill Gates in his sleep. This is ridiculous

It doesn't work in that way.
If a device is enabled at startup, the OS is always trying to find some drivers for that device.
You need to disable the onboard graphics from BIOS.
You should find something like "Onboard Video" and "Primary Video Adapter"
(in the same BIOS section with "Onboard LAN" and "Onboard Audio").
You need to disable the onboard graphics!

Disabling this is sometimes necessary to prevent conflicts with AGP, PCI and PCI-E Video cards
the actual switch for disabling the onboard video could be a physical jumper OR a software BIOS setting

Remus, in all honesty, if I didn't know you, I would have thrown my computer out of the window by now.

I'll give this a look and figure out how to do it.

I mean, it has to be a conflict there. A: I keep getting messages saying so! B: I KNOW I did everything right as far as installation goes and I know the card is technically "working."

I was all excited! I even bought a new USB keyboard and optical mouse and cleaned my LCD with windex and bought spray air to get the dust out of my PC. I was ready for war!

HEre are my step-by-step plans. Tell me if I'm getting it wrong.

1: Uninstall ATI graphics card
2: Hook monitor back up to analog
3: Disable (not uninstal) nVidia driver
4: Shut off PC, unplug it and take card out
5: Hook PC back up w/o card, get into BIOS and change setting (no 'disable onboard' in Dell's BIOS, but there is an option to make PCI the main card)
6: Unplug again, hook card back up, boot PC w/monitor plugged in DVI (or analog?)
7: Install ATI driver
8: Find Milan and Kurt and issue a beating

Tweak these steps if you see something I'm doing wrong and/or unnecessary.

For now, all you need to do is to read the manual and to disable the Nvidia 6100 onboard chip (not driver!).
If it's a jumper, you need to shut down the computer, to wait 10 minutes and to change that jumper.
If it's a BIOS setting, you need to restart the computer, to find that setting and to change it.
The OS won't load any driver if the device is not detected.

Work is piling up on me so much that I can't even breathe. I've been fooling with this for 3 days. I can't do it anymore right now. I'll have to wait until later to try and fix it.

How do I access teh BIOS? I see F2 and F8 commands for boot menu, etc. Is that where the BIOS is at? Or do I need to get in another way?

Edit:

Okay, so I got into the BIOS through F2 Setup. There isn't any such command for disabling onboard graphics. There's only a command for "Init first display," and that was already set to PCI. I tried to set it to PCI-E, since my card bridges to PCI-E, and still it's the same junk.

(I'm assuming this is for monitor display, and since my card is bridged that I can go with either option there. It's nothing to do with the game performance really)

The only "Onboard" option I see to disable anywhere is "Onboard nVidia LAN"

What is LAN? I thought that was my internet connection?

So, I guess it's a switch on the motherboard. And I haven't the slightest clue where to find that. I Googled my model (Dell Inspiron 531s) and I can find stuff talking about pins and plugs... but nothing related to graphics cards.

I'm over it. I'll wait until tomorrow to fool with this stuff. I need to work or else they'll come repossess the graphics card anyway.

I have been talking to them for the past 2 hours.

here's what I know

NO jumper. NO way to disable in BIOS

NO card will work unless it's a PCI-E

I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY SOLD ME A PCI THEN!!!

So I'm getting a refund. And I'm not going to use any graphics!

I set my video memory in BIOS to 256mb instead of 64mb. I upgraded my onboard drivers to as current as I can get them.

And my added onboard memory and 2GB will just have to do.

The only other card even compatible with my particular system is the SAME X1300 card, only a PCI-E 512mb model.

nVidia cards will not work in my PC, so says the guy.

Edit to include:

After I get my refund, I can then get the PCI-E 512mb model that, so says the guy (idiot morons), will work in place of onboard graphics. Vista will recognize the PCI-E, and I can set it in my BIOS to recognize it. The reason it wasn't recognizing it is because of the PCI bridge to get to PCI-E.

Now my camp performance is at an all-time worse.

I don't get it. The extra RAM should at least keep it the same, no? lol

VIP w/Johnny B, Topz, Zesuga, Kulo and two others gave me 7/50 and I couldn't kill anyone.

lol

End of my rope here...

I've tried. I've spent money that I didn't have to spend. It's just too much. All I want is a Nintendo so I can play Mario. I'm not that worried about an FPS game and I need to stop trying to be. It's driving me insane.

You need to uninstall the ATI drivers, to reinstall the Nvidia drivers and to reinstall the Shockwave plugin.
You might need to restart the system several times.
With 2GB system RAM (instead of 1GB) and 256MB Video RAM you should get a performance boost.

I did all that.

This is strange now.

Okay. First and foremost, the ATI still registers as present in my programs. But I can't remove it. The screen still looks like I have the new graphics card installed.

I go to remove it and it says "ATI cannot be found on this computer."

I go into device manager and uninstall the onboard graphics driver (so I can reinstall it after), and after I reboot the PC looks the same and the driver is already there.

Camp looks a lot smoother and the players look different (in a good way), but my FPS goes from 50/50 at times to 12/50 back and forth back and forth...

I think it's the ATI still here somehow. I don't know how to remove it completely.

Update:

Deleted every ATI file I could find to delete. Restarted. Uninstalled onboard. Restarted. Reinstalled onboard. Restarted. Uninstalled Shockwave. Restarted. Reinstalled Shockwave. Restarted. Attempted to play -- same stuff.

The game looks better cosmetically. Players move smoother (for the 1 second I have 30+ FPS), the red is darker, the greens and yellows stand out, I can see detail, etc.

But then it becomes choppy for a few seconds, drops me down to uberlow FPS, and just repeats the process over and over.

Try this tool: http://www.drivercleaner.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In any case, as I said from beginning, ATI and Nvidia on the same computer is ... "I'm looking for troubles".
Probably a Vista fresh install is the best way to go on.
Anyway, do not forget to disable the Antialiasing for your onboard Nvidia 6100 graphics.

Yeah. I've already done 2 fresh installs to try and get my graphics card to work. Then I had to spend 1/2 the day figuring out why my modem and router (for my brother's PC) was cutting out. Turns out the router settings were layered or something, so I had to start that over.

I'll fool with it later on. I shouldn't have been fooling with it today. I'm well behind on work.

I have bad luck when it comes to this PC stuff.
